night crossing

(double channel/overlapping video installation, 2014)

This work merges two journeys, undertaken separately and on different continents, into one narrative of competing focus.

One trip is a calm and habitual pilgrimage: a family drive down a sleepy nighttime highway in Georgia while en route from Toronto to Florida. The other is chaotic and uncertain: a search for an unknown hotel, undertaken after nightfall in the Moroccan Sahara. The motions of these two trips converge and diverge, at times flowing as one seamless drive, rugged yet sleepy, and at others veering off with a jarring split into isolated stories only partially comprehensible in the jumble of information.

This video is documentation of a work created in collaboration with Paul Moleiro. It was displayed at the Drake Lab in Toronto in August 2014.
